The management of “IREME Mass Media” regrets that IREME News (ireme.net and ireme.org) has been blocked in Rwanda for the second time in a pace of four years. This time it has been blocked while it was under re-construction.
IREME was created in August 2012 as an investigative reporting Media outlet with major focus on accountability, justice and human rights. As IREME means (Quality & Efficiency) our news are factual, cross-checked and highly verified, so to be trustworthy and useful to our readership.
In 2013 and 2014, IREME.net has experienced six attacks from strong hackers, who affected our publications. In 2014, IREME Newspaper printed issue 1. In the same year, April 2014, thecontents/data of IREME.net were deleted by hackers. This happened after IREME Director had briefly fled the country following serious threats on him. Later IREME.net reappeared as IREME.org.
November 18th, 2015, IREME has been blocked in Rwanda under RURA orders, referring to the administrative measures communicated by Patrick Nyilishema, DG/RURA to the IREME CEO, Mr. John Williams Ntwali, blaming IREME for republishing BBC-Gahuza News banned from Rwanda FM waves (among other accusations).
IREME has then suspended the publication, since it couldn’t access the targeted readership (Published by Rwandans, to Rwandans, for Rwandans’ common interests).
After 45 months blockage, IREME resumed publications in September 2019, with the initial editorial line and same mission we had in 2012. It was only after two weeks that MTN Rwanda, the biggest local telecommunication provider blocked IREME accessibility to whoever uses their internet, on mobile handsets and computers. We don’t know yet what might havebeenthe rationalebehind. Our efforts to get answers from MTN have been fruitless.
Meanwhile, if you’re one of MTN internet consumers in Rwanda, IREME.net can only be accessed using OPERA Mini browser or via Proxy.
We will keep serving Rwandans, as far as we are allowed to do so.
